How points work

Each board earns points by its level: Gentle 100, Steady 150, Tricky 200, Tough 250, Fiendish 300.
A Fun board earns 50.
Solve all seven boards from Monday to Sunday for 100 more.

How to play

Each day's board is a management picture cut into 16 squares. There are three ways to play it, easiest first: 1 Swap, 2 Fun and 3 the day's level.
Swap: all 16 squares are on the board. Tap a tile, then another, to swap them. A tile in its right place locks with a tick.
Fun and the day's level: one square is missing. Tap or swipe a tile next to the gap to slide it. Tapping a tile further along the same row or column slides the whole line.
Put the picture back together to unlock the saying, the research behind it and a link to the source.
The small picture beside the board shows what you're building. Tap it to see it big, and tap again to go back to the tiles. Look as often as you like.
Tile numbers start on. For more of a challenge, tap Hide numbers under the board.
The day's level follows the week, from Gentle on Monday to Fiendish on Sunday, and sets the board's points. Solve all seven boards from Monday to Sunday for 100 more.
Choose Swap, Fun or the day's level before your first move. Once you start, that's your board for the day, and tomorrow starts where you chose. Swap and Fun have no clock and are worth 50 points.
Stuck? After 4 minutes on Fun, or 7 on the day's level, you can finish the board as Swap. Tiles already in place stay put. The board earns no points, but you keep your streak.
Each board must be solved before midnight, your time. Then a new one arrives.
The clock only counts while the board is on screen. Tap the clock to pause; the board is covered until you resume.
Tap the topic under the title to see what it covers, and the lessons on it in your library.
Every board you solve earns points toward your Muddler rank and adds its lesson to My library. Tap your rank card under the board to see your stats, the ladder and My library.
Keep Muddlework on your home screen: it’s one tap away each day. On an iPhone, in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. On Android, in Chrome, tap the menu (⋮), then Add to Home screen or Install app. On an iPhone, Safari can clear a website’s saved data after 7 days without a visit, and your streak and library with it. From the home screen, they’re kept. The home-screen Muddlework keeps its own progress, separate from your browser, so once it's added, play from the icon.

How to finish a board

Most boards get stuck on the last two rows. Here's the trick most Muddlers learn.

Muddlework does not require an account and does not collect your name or contact details.

On your device. Your progress, streaks, points and library are stored only on this device. Clearing your browser data removes them.

What we receive. When the game loads the day's board, your device sends a small set of anonymous facts:

whether this is your first board;
approximately how many boards you have played, and how long since your first;
whether you opened, and whether you solved, the previous day's board;
whether you opened the game from your home screen;
any campaign link through which you arrived.

Sharing a result, solving the day's board, opening its source, and being offered or using a hint are also recorded. A solve includes the level, an approximate solving time and whether you are in your first week of play. Each is recorded no more than once per device per day.

How it is used. This information is used only in aggregate, to understand how the game is played and to improve it. It does not identify you. We do not use it to identify or track individuals, and we do not sell it or share it for advertising.

Feedback. If you send feedback, we store your comment, and your email address if you choose to provide it, solely to read and respond to it.

Hosting. The game is hosted by a third-party provider that keeps standard technical server logs.
